Radiant Towels

This pattern for handwoven towels is featured in Episode 2 of the “Handwoven Colour” course.

Create a simple gradient in the warp by using a combination of six colours in the warp. Then weave with a rainbow of weft hues to create six completely different looks to your kitchen towels.

MATERIALS

  • Warp: Approximately 1,100 yards of 8/2 unmercerized cotton from Maurice Brassard (1680 yd / 1530 m per 1/2 lb / 227 g cone; 100% Cotton) in 6 hues: 105 yds / 95 m of Marine (1425), 210 yds / 190 m of Peacock (4616), 320 yds / 285 m of Blue Pâle (756), 260 yds / 240 m of Fuchsia (5169), 160 yds / 145 m of Rose Foncé (1330), 60 yds / 50 m of Cayenne (5213)

  • Weft: Approximately 1,200 yards total of 8/2 unmercerized cotton from Maurice Brassard (1680 yd / 1530 m per 1/2 lb / 227 g cone; 100% Cotton) in 6 hues: 200 yds /185 m each of Rose Foncé (1330), Mauve Foncé (4273), Peacock (4616), Orange Brulé (8265), Marine (1425), Naturel (100).

SIZE

  • Relaxed, off the loom, unblocked: 11 1/2 inches (29 cm) wide x 21 inches (53.5 cm) long.

  • Finished, Blocked Dimensions: 10 3/4 inches (27.5 cm) wide x 18 3/4 inches (47.5 cm) long.

STRUCTURE

  • Equipment: 4-shaft loom with a minimum 15-inch (38 cm) weaving width, 10-dent reed (sample woven on a Schacht Baby Wolf loom)
  • Tools: 1 shuttle, warping board, reed hook, heddle hook
  • Weave Structure: plain weave
  • Warp Length: approximately 4.33 yards (396 cm) includes about 20 inches of loom waste
  • Warp Ends: 252
  • Ends Per Inch (EPI): 20 EPI (sley 2 ends in each slot of 10-dent reed)
  • Picks Per Inch (PPI): 20 PPI
  • Width in Reed: 12.6 inches (32 cm)
