Member Update // Spin to Knit Socks with Rachel Smith!

Just under a month ago, I was longing for temperatures to drop… for rainy days and chilly nights that allow you to bust out the lofty and warm hand-knits which moved to the back of the closet throughout the summer. Well, hello rainy days and chilly weather (although definitely not as cold here in Vancouver as elsewhere… ahem, SNOW?!!), and all I am dreaming about is more and more wool. It’s been a busy past few weeks as we’ve been preparing for the Knit City fibre festival this weekend, but also in my mind is excitement to begin new project plans to cover myself from head to toe in the delight and cosy of handmade warmth. And the latest workshops from Rachel Smith have sure added to the inspiration to do just that.
Now Available // Spin to Knit Socks
Socks are the humblest garment: We put them on our feet, wear them all day and wash them in the general load without really thinking much about them, but in this workshop we encourage you to think more of socks and what goes into spinning yarn for them, and how much fun it can be!
We’re so excited to have Rachel Smith, the host of the Wool n’ Spinning podcast and owner of welfordpurls.com, back at the School of SweetGeorgia teaching us about spinning for sock knitting! Rachel is an amazingly talented spinner and in this workshop she helps guide you through many aspects of spinning yarn for socks, such as: understanding different yarn structures and twist, colour management, how to keep your plies consistent and more! We hope you’ll join us!

Recent Student Works
Here’s what our students have been up to recently…
- See the perfectly autumn colours of Helen’s handspun skeins (not to mention the comical inspiration behind naming them!).
- Read along with Megan on her Epic Cloth journey, and see all of the latest handwoven pieces. Stunning!
- We’ve also loved learning along with Linda and her epic double weaving project. It’s been absolutely inspiring!
Don’t forget to check out the forums to ask any questions and post your current WIPs – we love to see what you’re making! Be sure to also tag us @schoolofsweetgeorgia or #schoolofsweetgeorgia so we can find your latest projects and share them!
Also! If you’re in Vancouver and will be attending Knit City this weekend, stop by and say Hi! Visit the SweetGeorgia team at both booth #159, as well as the Knitter’s Lounge where there will be plenty of fun demonstrations throughout the weekend. We hope to see you there!
Wishing you a colourful fibre-filled weekend!
