Member Update // Shibori Dyeing Basics Course Completed!

Cotton fabric tied with string, prepared for resist dyeing

And with that, the summer is over halfway through! Life and work have been really busy this summer, but I am still finding the time to enjoy my knitting in the evening. Since it’s getting hotter though I do feel slightly insane knitting an oversized cardigan in my lap. But I know come September it will be well worth it! I hope you all are staying hydrated, cool, and creative!

Shibori Dyeing Basics // Binding Circles + Pleats & Gather and Reviewing the Results!

This week, Mariana teaches us how to bind circles and use pleats and gathers to create more amazing patterns. If any of you have done tie dyeing before, the techniques used in these videos will look familiar to you. Check out the new videos here!

We’ve also posted a video showing the results of the dye sessions we did with Mariana. Shibori dyeing contains such a basic premise of resist dyeing, but it is truly amazing how creative you can get with it and it’s fun to get a surprise reveal at the end when unfolding the fabric. This workshop has really tempted me to give shibori dyeing a try considering how little equipment and cost is required. We hope you have enjoyed the Shibori Dyeing Basics workshop, and thank you so much to Mariana for sharing her skills with us!

Don’t forget to check out the forums for this workshop on our forums to ask questions and post your current WIPs! Felicia and I can’t wait to see what you make.

Live Office Hours // August 2019

Don’t forget! Our next Live Office Hours will be Thursday, August 22 at 10 AM PST. Please join us for a chat, updates from the school, and to get your fibre arts questions answered by Felicia! If you can’t make it, no worries as we always post the video on the SOS online library afterwards for all members to enjoy!

The easiest way to WATCH is to go to this permanent page on our website. If you would like to join the CHAT, you can catch us on YouTube when we are live OR visit us on Twitch. Either chat rooms should work!

Please send your questions for Live Office Hours to Felicia via message. Thank you for sending in your questions!

Housekeeping // What’s Coming Up Next

We have a ton of amazing content coming your way this fall. In September, we will be launching our Spin to Knit a Sweater workshop with Rachel Smith of the Wool N’ Spinning podcast! We are so excited to have Rachel join us as a SOS instructor and can’t wait to share her knowledge with you all.

Also, please join us for our SweetGeorgia Carolina Waves Mystery KAL starting August 27th! Carolina Waves is an asymmetrical shawl kit up in 5 skeins of fingering weight yarn designed by Tabetha Hedrick and was inspired by coastal communities. We do have knitting kits available on the SweetGeorgia site but it could also be a neat challenge for students to dye their own custom colour palette! You can purchase the pattern on our site or on Ravelry. We will be hosting this MKAL on the SOS forums so we can chat with each other while knitting our shawls.
