Welcome to Two-Heddle Weaving with Amanda Wood.
In this course, you’re going to learn how to use two heddles on your rigid heddle loom. This will give you helpful skills to weave with finer yarns more easily and weave layers. Amanda has created two projects for this course, each focusing on both concepts.
The first project is placemats using Venne 8/2 Cotton, incorporating a log cabin design as a feature. Using the same warp, you’ll make a dummy warp to set up for the second project, the Two-Heddle Sampler, which will teach you how to weave layers. Using two heddles and four pick-up sticks, Amanda teaches us how to weave separate layers on top of each other, exchange the layers and make a horizontal join, and finally how to attach both or only one side of our cloth, making a tube or a project that is double in width.
For this course, you’ll need a rigid heddle loom. If you’re a beginner with the rigid heddle, we strongly encourage you to work through the Fundamentals Rigid Heddle Weaving courses, as well as Lace with Pick-Up Sticks on a Rigid Heddle Loom, first.
Throughout the videos, you’ll learn:
- Two-heddle theory
- Threading and weaving for finer yarns
- Making a dummy warp
- Weaving layers
- Troubleshooting
The Two-Heddle Weaving course includes a comprehensive workbook with beautiful photos, tips, and resources.

#fo Before & After: Wet finishing edition. Look at how big of a difference it made! Interestingly, it only shrank for 2 inches warp-wise and 1.5 inches weft-wise. The minimal shrinkage is probably due to a combination of the cashmere not being fulled properly and it blooming significantly in the water.
(Please avert your eyes from the mistakes which I painstakingly corrected before wet finishing)

I was trying to weave summer and winter without changing my tie-up… trying to take a short cut and just use the tie-up I had for overshot. But it made it slow, confusing, and inefficient. Just taking a bit of extra time to change the tie-up and also switching out a shuttle that kept catching… now this is weaving so easily and so quickly.
Sometimes it’s better to take the time upfront to stop, reset, and make things right. It just makes everything work better.

Blocks!! This is the very start of an exploration into summer & winter on my 4-shaft counterbalance loom. Only two blocks are possible with four shafts, but I can see the possibilities…
Warp yarn: vennecolcoton 8/2 organic cotton
Pattern weft yarn: ashford_wheels_looms 5/2 mercerized cotton

Finished a large blanket on the 48" #RigidHeddleLoom
Mostly worsted weight wool with a bit of mohair thrown in here a there. I learned that 14-year-old boys are not great assistants when warping a loom if you don`t want tight selvedges.
Learned how to hemstitch and use a fringe twister with this project. Also, I used up A LOT of random skeins and leftover bits which is always a good thing.
