Welcome to Two-at-a-Time Socks with Tabetha Hedrick Coming to SOS on Oct 5, 2023!
You’ve knit top-down and toe-up socks, now it’s time to learn how to knit Two-at-a-Time Socks! In this exciting course, Tabetha leads us step-by-step through all the techniques needed to knit two socks at the same time with the magic loop method. From setting up, working the heel and rejoining in the round, Tabetha shows us just how easy and doable each step of the process is.
If you’ve never knit socks before, please watch our two beginner sock courses, Custom Top-Down Socks for Beginners and Custom Toe-Up Socks, before attempting the Two-at-a-Time Socks course. This course uses the Custom Top-Down Sock pattern, which has a very simple ribbed cuff and stockinette stitch. Once you’ve mastered the skills shown in the class, you’ll be able to apply these techniques to any sock pattern you’d like. We have provided the lacy Prismatic Socks pattern with this course, which is perfect for you to practice with.

Sometimes, after knitting for a few hours, my hands begin to hurt. Did I take a break? No. Have I stretched at regular intervals? No. Have I taken care of the body that loves to knit today? I fed it potato chips; does that count? It should, but no.
When our bodies hurt after crafting for extended periods, sometimes all we need is to stretch, put our project down for a while (a day or more), or work on something else that uses a different set of muscles. But what happens if you come back to the project and it still hurts? Does that mean that you can’t go back to the craft you love? Not necessarily. But you should have a chat with a health care provider to see if you have created an injury or strain.
What happens if, after that visit, you need to shift your crafting to something else, and you aren’t sure what that is? At Robyn Gibbons`s @nortonknitting new SOS article, she shares a few suggestions for crafts you currently do and ways to pivot and explore new crafting areas. Handspun, naturally dyed!
I wanted a travel blanket for an upcoming trip. I don’t travel enough to justify a travel blanket, but I enjoy going to the movies. Now I have something to bring with me. (I could even use it like a scarf but I don’t think I will lol)
The yarn is all handspun and naturally dyed!! Each yarn is 20-24wpi except one at 18wpi and the two dominionfleece skeins that I never checked but was definitely the plumbest. One of my handspun yarns was also 18wpi. So I took the average of all the yarns to find a sett.
Some of the yarns were spun very woollen so winding the warp through the cross/lease sticks was awful, (very sticky to each other).
Different WPI and different breeds (when wet finishing) wouldn’t give me a perfectly balanced cloth so I decided not to stress it and just wove 12 picks regardless. Some spots are see-through, and some are very full. This would have been more balanced if I planned and spun specifically for this project. But my handspun basket was overflowing and I needed to use it.
At one point I ran out of some of the yarn. I figured the best route was to keep the contrast repeats the same and not to worry about colour. I don’t think it is noticeable at all!
This is a very lightweight blanket which is what had wanted. I had enough handspun to make a worsted-weight blanket, but a thicker blanket is harder to travel with and pack away. Light was the way to go!
Natural dyes used:
-Quebracho
-Marigold
-Indigo
-Lac
-Sequoia
-Himalayan Rhubarb
-Two that were a mix of dyes in the pot
(Three were undyed/ natural)
This blanket has multiple breeds:
-White-faced Woodland
-North County Cheviot
-BFL
-Shetland
-Falkland
-Polwarth
-Perendale
-Corriedale
-CVM/ Romeny cross
-BFL/ Merino cross
I am so happy with this project!! I plan to use more of my handspun in an upcoming weave-along with doodler01 in the schoolofsweetgeorgia

I`m currently spinning through the Rya fleeces that I dyed last year. I`m spinning it all up as singles for use in weaving for upholstery or in weft bundles for tapestry weaving.
It has been lovely revisiting the colours I dyed in 2021. I wonder what colours will come out of the dyepot in 2022?
Pictured skein is 240 meters of Nm 6.4/1 yarn with a diameter of 20wpcm (51wpi), spun from Rya wool that was dyed in the fleece using pomegranate grounds with an alum mordant and an iron modifier.

A foot circumference over 9" / 23 cm may require a second skein of yarn.
