School Orientation

Welcome to the School of SweetGeorgia! We encourage you to start here and let us show you around the School of SweetGeorgia website.
Felicia Lo · April 1, 2020

Welcome to the School of SweetGeorgia!

We are so excited that you’ve joined us on this journey into the fibre arts. Our goal is to offer exceptional courses for those interested in making beautiful things with yarn and fibre. Whether spinning, weaving, knitting, and crochet, if you want to make it, we’re here to show you how.

In this mini-workshop, Felicia Lo, founder and creative director of SweetGeorgia Yarns, will introduce you to all the features and support available in the school.

Throughout the videos, you’ll learn how to:

  • Navigate to course, article, and tutorial content
  • Find your way around the forums
  • Set goals and find focus on the topics that interest you
  • Manage your account and subscriptions
  • Connect with a community of like-minded, multicraftual people
  • Learn how to get the support you need from staff teachers and fellow members

We are so happy you have joined our community. Let’s take a tour of the school and get you started in the School of SweetGeorgia!

You can find our Community Forums at the bottom of every lesson!

Sometimes, after knitting for a few hours, my hands begin to hurt. Did I take a break? No. Have I stretched at regular intervals? No. Have I taken care of the body that loves to knit today? I fed it potato chips; does that count? It should, but no.

When our bodies hurt after crafting for extended periods, sometimes all we need is to stretch, put our project down for a while (a day or more), or work on something else that uses a different set of muscles. But what happens if you come back to the project and it still hurts? Does that mean that you can’t go back to the craft you love? Not necessarily. But you should have a chat with a health care provider to see if you have created an injury or strain.

What happens if, after that visit, you need to shift your crafting to something else, and you aren’t sure what that is? At Robyn Gibbons's @nortonknitting new SOS article, she shares a few suggestions for crafts you currently do and ways to pivot and explore new crafting areas. Follow our link in @schoolofsweetgeorgia bio to read the full article »

How do you start your mornings, after the alarm clock and the sounds of your house permeate your consciousness? How do you embrace this brand new day filled with potential in front of you? As one of the adults in my family, the first 90 minutes usually blur between packing lunches, making breakfast and emptying the dishwasher. Then, we walk to school, a privilege we enjoy as often as possible. Afterwards, it’s time for tea and a moment with my partner before starting work.

But I will tell you, after pouring my cup of coffee, typically with some music softly playing in the background, I relish sitting in front of my spinning wheel. Now it’s time to refill my self-care cup, even if I can only manage to sit for five minutes. The sunlight streams through the window, casting a warm glow on the singles on the bobbin. Even spinning for that short time centres me and sets a lovely tone for my day. Many days, it feels like a challenge to fit it in, but just as I make time for the to-do list, spinning is part of my self-care routine, so I make it a priority.

At Greta Cornejo’s @gretacornejomakes new blog post, she talks about fibre prep tips and updates about our SOS Spin-Along, including information on today’s Zoom meetups-starting at 10:00 AM PDT and 1:00 PM PDT! Find more info at the post (link in bio to our SOS Articles section).

As the change of seasons and the back-to-school routines get settled, with the holidays and gift planning still weeks away, this is the perfect time to plan a project just for you. Join us this month for an SOS Spin-Along!

As Greta @gretacornejomakes shares in her new SOS post—
I’m celebrating the change of season by prepping fibre and getting it ready for spinning a fractal 2-ply yarn. I hope you join us in spinning for a project, plus share your spin-in progress with us and meet with new and old friends. You can join the spin-along at ANY time, so dive into your stash or visit the @sweetgeorgia shop to find some beautiful fibre (Felicia's handspun 3-ply fractal in BFL+Silk Salted Caramel is shown here) and spin along with us!

Read more about the spin-along and meetup information over at the SOS articles section... direct link in bio »
