Welcome to Multi-Shaft Weaving Basics
Ever since we began the School of SweetGeorgia, Felicia has been waiting for the right moment to share this topic of weaving basics with a multi-shaft loom! Welcome to our first multi-shaft weaving course!
We’re going to learn how to dress a table loom and floor loom using the “back-to-front” method and weave a sampler project. Using the sampler as a reference, we’ll design our own project and warp the loom a second time to make a handwoven cloth of our own design. Through this course, Felicia will also show you how to read a weaving draft so that you can get up and running with a variety of simple weave structures, right from the start.
The looms used in this course include:
- Leclerc Nilus II 4-shaft floor loom (45″ wide)
- Schacht Baby Wolf 8-shaft floor loom (26″ wide)
- Schacht 4-shaft table loom (16″ wide)
Not to worry if you don’t have a floor loom. You can also use a table loom for the sampler project and final project. A minimum of 4-shafts is necessary for the sample weaving drafts we are working with.
If you have not yet had a chance to view our previous course which was called Essential Weaving, we encourage you to go check that out as well. Essential Weaving gives you a fundamental baseline of knowledge around different looms, the different parts of the loom, winding a warp, sitting at the loom, using a shuttle, using the tools, and more.
Talk about the Multi-Shaft Weaving Basics course with members of the School of SweetGeorgia. Post project pictures, share personal reflections, and join the conversations in our Community Forums!

This warp has been on the loom for a year. Each project that I’ve cut off has gotten progressively narrower with each sample. But now … it’s time to cut it off and start fresh. I kind of want a therapeutic kitchen towel project but then I also want a hand-dyed yarn project… so I’m still deciding 🤷🏻♀️ but either way, I’m interested to see what I’ll weave this winter. #cuttingofftheloom #counterbalanceloom #weaving #weaversofinstagram #handwoventextiles #leclercfanny #summerandwinterweave #weavingblocks #blockweaves #blockweave #sosweaving

#fo Before & After: Wet finishing edition. Look at how big of a difference it made! Interestingly, it only shrank for 2 inches warp-wise and 1.5 inches weft-wise. The minimal shrinkage is probably due to a combination of the cashmere not being fulled properly and it blooming significantly in the water.
(Please avert your eyes from the mistakes which I painstakingly corrected before wet finishing)

I was trying to weave summer and winter without changing my tie-up… trying to take a short cut and just use the tie-up I had for overshot. But it made it slow, confusing, and inefficient. Just taking a bit of extra time to change the tie-up and also switching out a shuttle that kept catching… now this is weaving so easily and so quickly.
Sometimes it’s better to take the time upfront to stop, reset, and make things right. It just makes everything work better.

Blocks!! This is the very start of an exploration into summer & winter on my 4-shaft counterbalance loom. Only two blocks are possible with four shafts, but I can see the possibilities…
Warp yarn: vennecolcoton 8/2 organic cotton
Pattern weft yarn: ashford_wheels_looms 5/2 mercerized cotton
