Welcome to Granny Squares!

Coming to the School of SweetGeorgia on April 20, 2023.

Have you ever been drawn to some awesome crochet blankets on the internet? Many of them are made with granny squares or granny square variations. Not to mention the handbags, pillows, placemats, scarves, and cardigans! You just can’t believe how many designs are made with such a simple pattern.

So now, you’re going to learn how to make some granny squares! The content will cover starting in rounds, crocheting the basic square pattern, changing colours, and piecing together to make larger projects. This course is based on the foundational techniques that were covered in the Crochet Basics course; thus, we won’t go into details for each stitch. We will focus on making granny squares! Let’s have fun!

By the end of the course, you will know how to make a granny square as big or small as your heart may wish! You will learn two ways to start the granny square as well as  two different joining methods. The sky’s the limit!

Throughout the videos, you’ll learn how to:

  • crochet the basic granny square
  • get gauge
  • make a coaster set
  • make a headband
  • crochet a granny square blanket
  • join granny squares two ways to make a pillowcase

Do review lesson 0.1 Granny Squares Materials to find list of yarn, tools and downloadable PDF files needed for the course with Charlotte Lee. Many materials can be purchased through SweetGeorgia Yarns.

The internet has been a wonderful boon for all us makers, giving us access to patterns from people and places all over the world. For those of us who crochet, crochet terms can be problematic… but it isn’t anything we can’t handle with a little bit of sleuthing up front.

Let’s dive in and see what makes English language crochet patterns a tad special.

Read Amanda Buckley's @mandythephilomath new 'Spot the Difference: US vs UK Crochet Terms' article at the School, with examples and helpful information on how to determine whether your crochet pattern uses US or UK crochet terms. Find the article link over at our link in bio »

In addition to learning from courses, live lectures and the community forums, don't miss all of the fabulous content being shared over at our SOS Articles section, such as Ruth Nguyen's @redearthdesignstudio recently released: Knit or Crochet? The Multicraftual Says Both!

Can you knit or crochet? If you’re here, it might very well be both! Multicraftual making is the heartbeat of the School of SweetGeorgia—weaving and spinning and dyeing. Oh my! For almost a decade, I thought of myself as exclusively a knitter, even though I learned to crochet around the same time I learned to knit. In more recent years, I’ve come to identify as a crocheter, as well, by incorporating crochet more intentionally into my multicraftual cycle.
