Welcome to Fresh Indigo Leaf Dyeing!

Dyeing with fresh indigo leaves is a very easy way of getting started with natural dyeing. Taught by Caitlin ffrench, this course covers dyeing using both the salt rub method and the ice dyeing method. The specific type of indigo that we’ll be working with is Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria), also known as dyer’s knotweed or Chinese indigo.

The videos in this course will teach:

  • Sourcing the seeds
  • Planting indigo
  • Materials needed
  • Harvesting the leaves
  • Ice dye method
  • Salt rub method
  • Re-rooting the stems
  • Seed saving

Just like other ways of indigo dyeing, you will first need to scour your fibres so they will be clean and ready to accept the dye. Information for this is provided in the course workbook and you can learn scouring and preparing items in Caitlin’s Natural Dyeing Basics course.

We’d love to see what you make! Please share any questions, progress and chat in the SOS community forums or on Instagram using the hashtags: #sosnaturaldyeing and #schoolofsweetgeorgia.

Is your mini-skein stash growing? Taking place this September, join in the the fun chat thread in the SOS community forums about our casual make-along, the Great Mini Skein Stash Down, where we'll knit, weave, crochet, punch needle, tapestry etc. with mini-skeins accumulated from the SOS dyeing study groups and courses.

Whatever you want to make is fine! This is an unofficial make-along so no hashtags, deadlines, prizes nor rules. Simply an encouraging space to use some of the supplies you have unused (or left over); everyone loves a good mini-skein/scrap busting project! If you know of a good pattern you have done in the past, please share it in the forum thread too. SweetGeorgia has added three patterns available to SOS Members: weaving pattern Trimmed in Twill by Felicia @felicialowong, knitting pattern Winter Dawn by Tabetha @tabismiles, and Felicia's crochet Granny Square tutorial. We hope you'll join in and make with us!

I'm currently spinning through the Rya fleeces that I dyed last year. I'm spinning it all up as singles for use in weaving for upholstery or in weft bundles for tapestry weaving.

It has been lovely revisiting the colours I dyed in 2021. I wonder what colours will come out of the dyepot in 2022?

Pictured skein is 240 meters of Nm 6.4/1 yarn with a diameter of 20wpcm (51wpi), spun from Rya wool that was dyed in the fleece using pomegranate grounds with an alum mordant and an iron modifier.

I’ve been on holiday all week and I’ve spent most of it dyeing lots of yarn with natural dye extracts.
.
It’s been so fun to see the colours on proper size skeins instead of the teeny tiny samples 😊
.
And I’ve learned a lot! Mostly thanks to an amazing online resource from schoolofsweetgeorgia 🧶
.
From top to bottom this merino/nylon sock yarn has been dyed with:
.
Sorghum
.
Persian Berries (Buckthorn)
.
Goldenrod
.
Myrobalan + Iron
.
Weld + Logwood
.
Logwood
.
Cochineal
.
Cochineal (tiniest amount)
.
Would highly recommend a large craft project to occupy your time when it’s far too expensive to go away anywhere! 🙃
.
I have two more neutral dye pots still simmering and when they’re done I’ll have dyed most of the yarn I ordered 🙌🏻
.
Back to work tomorrow for a rest! 🥱
