Welcome to Dyeing Large Amounts of Yarn

Welcome to our comprehensive course,ย Dyeing Large Amounts of Yarn, where we go beyond the basics of dyeing just one or two skeins and move up to dyeing eight skeins or more. However, our focus here goes further than just the quantity, as we address the ergonomics involved in dyeing larger amounts of yarn. Lifting heavy pots, repetitive movements, and joint pressure can cause immediate and long-term injuries.

Leading this course is Charlotte Lee, the Assistant Production Manager atย SweetGeorgia Yarns, who will expertly guide us through these concerns. Charlotte shares valuable tips for dyeing in larger batches and addresses common questions frequently raised in our community forums, such as dye exhaustion and yarn bleeding.

If you are new to acid-dyeing yarn, we suggest exploring our other Acid Dyeingย courses available in the school. This workshop wonโ€™t cover dye stock formulation in detail. Additionally, we offer a companion course, Dyeing Large Amounts of Fibre, for those interested in further expanding their skills in this exciting craft.

Throughout the videos, youโ€™ll learn:

  • Safety with protective gear
  • Handling large amounts of yarn
  • The five dyeing variables
  • Ergonomics of dyeing
  • Adjusting acid amounts
  • Exhausting dyesย and moreโ€ฆ

We are excited to start this journey with you. Remember, you can find a link to the community forums under every lesson video. Charlotte is there to help us on our way.

Canvas

Oh, almost forgot to share. I also had three leftover pieces of canvas which I dyed with the eco printing remains bath and gave one piece an iron dunk.

I also had some madder dyed canvas. The madder exhaust bath was so weak, the camera couldnโ€™t pick up on the subtle warmth in the colour. But I did get a different shade in the iron.

So I just took a picture of the eco plant remains and madder dyed canvas together.

Gradient

Remember that super blotchy marigold fabric I dyed?? I took it most of it and cooked it in that pot of eco-printing remains.

Then I made a 2% iron bath and put some of the fabric in. I staggered the times on when it came out to get different degrees of saddening.

I still have blotchy fabric but in a gradient of colours now. And there are even more colours within in piece of cloth because of the blotchy spots.

The plan is to make a patchwork quilted jacket. When I fussy cut the squares, it wonโ€™t look blotchy but intentional.

I am very happy with these results!
