Little Basic Cardi :: In lieu of the little black dress, I’ve always had a little black cardigan as one of my wardrobe staples and feel that every knitter needs one (substitute neutral colour of your choice here). For years I resisted writing a pattern for it because it’s black and hard to photograph the details. Also, would knitters want a pattern for a basic cardigan?
My schoolofsweetgeorgia Fundamentals to Finishing Knits course was the perfect catalyst to put a spin on my idea. The cardigan doesn’t need to be black, and yes, a basic cardigan is the perfect canvas on which to practice fundamental techniques and fine finishing. I wanted this to be a pattern you would want to knit again and again, in different colours, different yarn weights, different modifications. That idea lead me to writing three separate patterns in Fingering, DK, and Worsted weight yarn.
All three Little Basic Cardi (LBC) patterns feature a range of variations for you to customize sleeve and body length, choose which side you want your buttons, and you have the option between two different shoulder constructions. All of this to offer you the opportunity to practice the different techniques in the course.
Of course, the patterns are available with extended sizing and non-gendered language. All bodies deserve their own perfect little basic cardi.
During our photo shoot we recreated my design concept drawing. Swipe left to see!

While cropped sweaters are all the rage right now, not everyone is comfortable in them. A standard length cardigan should be a staple in all wardrobes and it will stand the test of time! The Little Basic Cardi (LBC) offers two hem lengths and three sleeve lengths for you to customize the sweater to *your* preferences.
The pattern is size inclusive with 13 sizes to fit folks with 28 to 66" (71 to 167 cm) chests plus 2 to 4" (5 to 10 cm) of additional ease. It has non-gendered language and options for buttonholes on either side of the front opening. The Little Basic Cardi is also offered in three different yarn weights (Fingering, DK, Worsted), each as a separate pattern.
The LBC was designed as a project pattern for my Fundamentals to Finishing Knits course for schoolofsweetgeorgia, giving students the opportunity to practice the many techniques and tips I present in the course. The SGY team liked the pattern so much, they are offering each yarn weight/gauge as individual patterns in their shop!

Choosing your size :: The Little Basic Cardi was designed to be worn with about 2-4"/5-10cm of positive ease (proportional to the finished measurements). But we thought it also looked cute on Charlotte, who's wearing it with almost 5"/12.5cm ease.
So how do you decide what size to knit? Measure a favourite sweater you like the fit of, or go to the store and try on sweaters until you find a fit that you like. In the changing room, lay the sweater(s) on the floor and take their key measurements to match up with the pattern schematic. Make sure you're comparing sweaters of similar weight. In other words, if you plan on knitting a worsted weight project, don't compare with very fine-weight sweaters. The thickness of the knitted fabric will play a role in how you like the fit.
A little note on ease; ease is difference between your body measurements and the sweater's finished measurements. A sweater is often larger in circumference; this is positive ease. But lots of sweaters look great if they have negative or zero ease across the bust and positive ease around the stomach and hips. Examples of garments we wear with negative ease in our daily lives are socks and underwear. In those cases, the negative ease helps them stay on!
