  • dyeing your own yarns and fibres using immersion dyeing techniques
  • understanding and learning to control the dye process to produce colours intentionally
  • discovering your own creative process, balancing the science and art of dyeing and understanding the variables that affect dyed results so that you can play freely with colour
  • setting up your own dye studio with the right space and the ideal equipment for acid dyeing
  • learning the differences in working with yarn vs. spinning fibre
  • troubleshooting both during and after the dye process
  • creating your own system to record your dye experiments and sessions

Create beautiful, subtle, and solid shades with immersion dyeing

What You'll Need to Get Started

One of the biggest hurdles to getting started with dyeing is figuring out what space and equipment you'll need. We've created a comprehensive list of basic supplies and tools that are easily sourced. Get your yarns, fibres, dyes, and some basic heating equipment and you'll be set. Then just bring your enthusiasm and we'll make some colour!

Why This Class is Different

No doubt, there are many places you can go to learn how to dye your own yarn. In fact, there are plenty of free videos and tutorials online that can show you how to splash dye on yarn! But my passion and joy has been about creating unapologetic colour but always with control.

This class is about learning how to control colour precisely to get exactly the hue or shade you desire. It's about intentional colour.

My dye techniques do employ some math and calculations to produce repeatable results. And to me, this is paramount in being able to develop new colourways in the future without the results always being random.

"When Felicia of SweetGeorgia started talking about the school she wanted to create, I immediately jumped into this adventure! I already knew her class on Craftsy, her podcast and I recently bought her book! I hoped that this school would be of the same quality. It's the case. I am interested in dyeing wool and I really wanted to understand and master the colours I wanted to create. That's what Felicia is suggesting. A video as well as a booklet to dye the colours you imagined! Exactly. But this goes further, with this lesson, you understand the theory of colours and its application on the dyeing of wool. With clear and precise explanations, you get to know your pigments. Then, step-by-step, Felicia explains to us a method of dyeing. Her knowledge and experience make this lesson a base for discovering and deepening your dyeing skills. This is exactly what I was looking for and I have not found anywhere else. Moreover, the interaction with Felicia allows me to ask questions about my achievements and to go further. I am impatient to discover other lessons!"

What if I am unhappy with the course?
We would never want you to be unhappy! This will give you a good idea of what our video lessons are like. If you are still unsatisfied with your purchase, please contact us in the first 30 days and we will give you a full refund.
What kind of supplies or equipment will I need to take this class?
You'll need some acid dyes (available from ProChemical & Dye or Dharma Trading Co.), undyed protein-based (like wool or silk) knitting yarns or spinning fibres, and some heating equipment (pots, pans, portable burner or something similar). Please watch our "preview" video lesson on "Safety in the Dye Studio" for more notes on safety equipment like N95 masks, gloves, and more. We have the complete list of tools and supplies available for download to students.
I don't care to be so precise with my dyeing. Is this for me?
Absolutely. Sometimes, I like to be more carefree with my dyeing sessions as well! The information that I share in this course is about giving you a foundation to understand how colour is created with acid dyes and how you can manipulate the variables to produce the effect you want. Once you know these fundamentals, you can be more intuitive and play with colour more freely without needing to calculate all your dye quantities. It's all about strengthening your knowledge base so you can be a more confident dyer and colourist!
