Discover new ways to add complexity and richness to your hand-dyed colourways using acid dyes and protein-based fibres. Building upon the skills and knowledge in our Dyeing Intentional Colour course, this course will explore:
This course was designed to be an intense and in-depth exploration of hand-dyeing techniques for dyers who are passionate about precision dyeing and hungry for the next step. If I taught this course as a live event or a retreat, it would likely be a 5-day long workshop! By teaching through these videos, I’m excited about the opportunity to reach you where you are right now with your dyeing.
I know that when I started learning how to dye yarn, my appetite for new ideas and techniques was insatiable but there was not a lot of resources for me to go to. After the past 13 years of exploring dye techniques, I’m happy to share the things I’ve learned with new and experienced dyers so that more creative spirits get inspired to enjoy the transformational power of beautiful hand-dyed colour.
Dyeing can be as simple as using a single pot and a heating element, but we’ve created a comprehensive list of tools and supplies that we use in this course and that might be helpful to build or augment your dye studio set up. Included here is a list of suppliers for yarns, fibres, dyes, and knitted blanks. As well, many of these items are available in our online shop here to get you started.
This course builds upon our foundation of creating intentional colour and explores hand-dyeing techniques to add that elusive depth and richness that makes colours sing.
Through 47 video lessons in 8 modules and over 5 hours of content, you can walk beside me as I dye yarn in sixteen different examples. My dyeing style involves working with precision and intention as I create colourways, so you can join me as I lead you through the simple math calculations that are so helpful in preparing for an efficient and effective session in the dye studio.
Driven by an obsessive, passionate and often tumultuous relationship with color, Felicia Lo has intensely pursued everything related to design, dyeing, spinning, weaving, knitting and photography. In 2005, Felicia Lo founded SweetGeorgia Yarns, an artisanal hand-dyed yarn company. Starting out with just three skeins of yarn for sale on the newly minted Etsy.com, demand soon exploded within a matter of months. Over the past decade, SweetGeorgia Yarns has grown into a team of skilled craftspeople and artisans led by Felicia, who also teaches fibre arts fundamentals including dyeing, spinning, weaving, knitting, and color theory for crafters and artisans. Felicia is the author of "Dyeing to Spin & Knit" and teaches "Spinning Dyed Fibers" on Craftsy.com. Felicia currently lives and works in the Vancouver area with her young family.
